William Gilbert "Dodaddy" Hightower, 94, went home to be with the Lord on May 29, 2016, surrounded by family and friends who loved him dearly. Gilbert was born in Guin, Alabama to Jelks and Grace Hightower, attended Marion County schools, and graduated from Massey Business College in Birmingham. He went on to a long, successful, and fulfilling career with US Steel. On December 6, 1941, on the eve of Pearl Harbor, he and Dorothy "Dot" Brown Malloy married in Birmingham and left by train for their honeymoon in Chattanooga, only to return home the next morning after seeing the headlines that signaled a changed world. They have remained inseparable and devoted to each other for 74 years. Gilbert was the oldest living member of Third Presbyterian Church ("Brother Bryan's Church"), where he had served as a deacon, elder, and trustee for decades. For many years he directed and worked in the weekly food ministry of Third Presbyterian, compassionately serving the homeless and needy in the Birmingham community. Dodaddy never met a stranger and eagerly welcomed every passerby into his home, his church, or his river cabin. He treasured the Lord Jesus Christ above all things, but his family was a very close second, followed by beautiful summer days on the Warrior River, and Alabama football. He leaves behind his wife Dot, his daughter Diane Hightower Trucks (Allen), sons Mike (Emily), and Tim (Donna), four grandchildren, Lisa Trucks Carlton (Tom), Ginger Trucks Dyer (Tom), Catherine Hightower Warren (Chris), and Daniel Hightower (Jill), and seven great-grandchildren Julianne (Josh), Haley, Noah, Meredith, Jackson, Hannah, and Jacob. Also survived by Todd, Katie, Chad, Jennifer & Jack Reagin, sister, Mildred Webb and brother, Troy (Emma) Hightower. The family appreciates Sarah Parker and her fellow caregivers for their gentle devotion to Dodaddy and Grandmother.

Visitation will be at Third Presbyterian Church on Thursday, June 2, 2016, from 10:00-11:00 am, with a Celebration of Life Service immediately following at the church. Burial will be at 2:30 pm, with a graveside service at Guin Cemetery directed by Norwood Funeral Home in Guin, Alabama.
