Eddy Cantrell

Eddy Cantrell age 52 of Guin, AL died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at his residence.

Born in Guin, AL, he is the son of the late Richard Pearceson Hobson and Mattie Marie Vaughn Cantrell. He had lived in Guin all of his life and worked for 3M Company. He was a member of the 877th Army National Guard and served in Iraq.

He is survived by his Wife, Sarina Benton Cantrell of Guin, AL, A Daughter, Emily (Jeremy) Cantrell Pruett of Tuscaloosa, AL, A Son, James Michael Cantrell of Guin, A Brother, Richard (Diann) Vaughn Cantrell of Guin, AL, 2 Grandchildren, Madison and Houstyn Pruett, Nieces and Nephews, Skilyn Benton, Wayne Cantrell, Mason Benton, Deania Benton, David Benton, Ola Kay Dunn, Cary Dunn, Drake Dunn, Cody Cantrell and Tori Cantrell.

He was also preceded in death by a Sister, Nell Cantrell.

Services held Friday, May 9, 2008 at 11:00 AM from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with Burial in the Guin City Cemetery with full military honors. Bro. Randy Wright officiating.

Charles B. Norton 

Charles B. Norton age 98 of Sulligent, AL, died Sunday, April 27, 2008 at the Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper, AL. 

Born in the Pine Springs Community to the late Claud Cylvester and Ella Plunkett Norton and the husband of the late Willie Mae Thomas Norton. He was a member of the Pine Springs United Methodist Church and was Past Master of the Masonic Lodge # 808 and a member of the Masonic Lodge #532. C.B. had lived in Birmingham, AL for Thirty-Six years and retired from U. S. Steel as an equipment operator. He was liked and loved by all who knew him with his witty sense of humor and personality. He had many friends and was a good friend to others. The sum of his life would be too lengthy to tell in a few words. He will be greatly missed by family and friends, but he left a legacy to be remembered. 

Survived by One Son: Charles (Geneva) Norton of Kimberly, AL, One Sister: Billie Fay (D.D.) Real of Hamilton, AL, Three Grandchildren: Beverly Green, Barry Norton, and Melanie Harris, Five Great Grandchildren: Christopher, Amanda, Jessica, Emily, and Savanna, and Eight Great Great-Grandchildren. 

Preceded in death by his Parents and his Wife and Three Sisters: Avis Irvin, Luree Otts, and Grace Anderson, and One Brother: Paul Norton. 

Services held Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Pine Springs Cemetery. Bro. Mitch Nethery officiating.

Visitation: Tuesday from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home.

Redden Thomas Wallace 

Redden Thomas Wallace age 97 of Guin, Alabama passed away Friday April 25, 2008 at the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield.   

Born in Beaverton, AL.  He is the Son of the late Aaron and Alice Harton Wallace and the Husband of the late Alice Pearl Metcalfe Wallace.  He had lived in the Guin area all of his life and was a member of the Guin Church Of Christ. 

He is survived by 4 Daughters, Mittie Nalls of Fayette, AL, Lillie (Jr.) Key of Guin, AL, Amanda Hackman of Guin, AL and Judy McDaniels of St. Louis, MO.

3 Sons, Redden  ( Anna Jean) Wallace, Jr., George (Ada) Wallace and Mack (Sandra) Wallace all of Guin, AL.  21 Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild. Son In Law, Clint Hubbert of Montgomery, AL. 

He was also preceded in death by a Daughter, Mary Hubbert, 2 Sons In Law Archie Nalls and James McDaniels, 5 Sisters and 6 Brothers. 

Services will be Friday May 2, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. from the Chapel with Burial in the Beaver Creek Cemetery.  Bro Arthur Freeman and Bro. Steve Clark officiating.

Roger Frank Silas

Roger Frank Silas age 62 of Guin, AL died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at his residence.

Born in Guin, AL. He is the Son of the late Delton and Selma Franks Silas. He Married Joyce Dale Knight on March 6, 1970 and had lived in Guin all of his life and was of the Free Will Baptist Church. He had worked as a mechanic for Health Tex in Guin and Southern Needle in Fayette.

He is survived by his Wife, Joyce Dale Knight Silas of Guin, AL, A Daughter, Tammy (Dwain) Ballinger of Guin, AL, A Son, Jason (Donna) Silas of Winfield, AL, A Granddaughter, Allison Ballinger and A Sister, Shirley Silas Wheeler of Birmingham, AL.

Services held Friday, April 18, 2008 at 2:00 PM from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Guin City Cemetery. Bro. James Walden officiating.

Clara Willodean Stanford

Clara Willodean Stanford age 86 of Mobile formerly of Guin, AL died Friday, April 4, 2008 in Mobile.

Born in Winfield, AL, she is the Daughter of the late Jeff and Donnie Vernon McDonald and the Wife of the late James Hal Stanford. She was a member of the Cypress Shores Baptist Church where she was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class.

She is survived by A Daughter, Charlie (Bill) Donald of Semmes, AL, Two Brothers, Harding (Frankie) McDonald of Guin, AL and Stanley (Irene) McDonald of Winfield, AL, Three Grandchildren, Donnie, Beth, and Sara Donald all of Semmes, AL, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services held Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 2:00 PM from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the West Alabama Memorial Gardens.
 

Visitation Thursday noon until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.

Warren Hollis 

Warren Hollis age 76 of Gadsden, AL died Sunday, April 6, 2008 in the Riverview Medical Center in Gadsden. 

Born in Lamar County, AL.  He is the Son of the late Guy and Ruby Gray Hollis. 

He was a former resident of Guin and had operated the Hollis Motel in Guin for several years.  He had lived in Gadsden the past 2 years, was a member of the Rock Creek Baptist Church in Bessemer and was a Veteran of the Korean War having served in the US Army.   

He is survived by A Brother, Terry (Ann) Hollis of Gadsden, AL, A Sister-In-Law, Tommie Hollis of Hueytown, AL, 2 Nieces, Maureen Hollis and Jan Campbell, 2 Nephews, Robert and Jimmy Hollis, Great Nieces and Nephews, Josh Hollis, Lee Hollis, Samantha Sullivan, Rob Satterwhite, Shan Campbell and Andrea Campbell, A Step Niece, Pam Rose Brasher and Step Nephew, Jason (Darlene) Rose and 5 Step Great Nieces and Nephews and Several Cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his Parents, and a Brother, Paul G. Hollis.

Matha Hollis 

Matha Hollis age 67, of Sulligent, AL passed away Friday April 4, 2008 at the Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory, Mississippi. 

She was born in Kemper County Mississippi to the late J.T. and Jessie Hammond Harbour. She has been a resident of the Sulligent area since 1968 and was a member of the Academy Baptist Church near Vernon, AL. Mrs. Hollis retired from the Lamar County Health Department from the Home Health Division were she was a Registered Nurse. 

Survived by her Husband: Lecial Hollis of Sulligent, AL, One Daughter: Gwendolen Rynn (Captain Justin, USAF) Hendricks of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Two Sons: Michael Ruben (Carolyn) Hollis of Caledonia, MS and Steven Ryan (Katie Jo) Hollis of Nashville TN, Two Sisters: Louise Wing of Houston, TX and Jackie Hollowell of Jackson, MS, One Brother: Tyrone Harbour of Collinsville, MS Three Grandchildren: Ashley Dannielle Hollis, Benjamin Thomas Hendricks, and Sophie Joy Hollis. A host of Nieces and Nephews. 

Preceded in death by her Parents and Three Brothers: Tom Harbour, Lamar Harbour and Cleve Harbour.

Fred Brown 

Fred Brown age 93 of Guin, AL died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at his residence. 

Born in Higdon, Arkansas, he is the Son of the late John and Cora Brown.  He had lived in Guin the past 33 years and was a member of the Philadelphia Methodist Church.  He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. 

He is survived by his Wife, Inez White Brown of Guin, AL, Two Sons, Darryl (Ann) Brown of Biloxi, MS and David Brown of Gulf Port, MS, Two Grandchildren, Amanda and Ashley, and A Sister Mary Tuggle of Joplin, MO.   

Services Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 2:00 pm from the Philadelphia Methodist Church with burial in the adjoining cemetery.  Bro. Shane Harris officiating. 

Visitation Saturday from 1 – 2 pm at the church.

Laura A. Swanigan

Laura A. Swanigan age 44 of Guin, AL died Friday, March 28, 2008 in the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS.

She was born in Guin, AL on October 23, 1963. She was one of eight children born to Mrs. Addie Lee Jones Swanigan and the late Lomax Swanigan, Sr. of Guin, AL.

She was a special friend to many and a wonderful person to be around. She would always brighten your day with her smile and laughter. Her kindness, joy of life, and love of family were contagious and will surely be missed. Until her accident, she was a devoted mother to her children and a hard worker. She also loved her siblings and family and was there to support them for as long as she could. She was a believer with strong faith, who was confident that everything would be better someday. God knew her heart, even until the end-and this is truly what matters in the hereafter.

She is survived by 2 Daughters, April Madison and Marquita Swanigan both of Guin, AL, Mother, Mrs. Addie Lee Swanigan, of Guin, AL, A Special Father, Hayward Lipsey of Guin, AL, 4 Brothers, Curtis Gene Swanigan, Maurice (Liz) Swanigan, Lomax Swanigan, Jr. and twin brother, Lawrence Alan Swanigan all of Guin, AL, 3 Sisters, Patricia Swanigan, and Barbara Swanigan both of Guin, AL, and Linda Wallace of Hamilton, AL.

Dolly Burnett Gilmer 

Dolly Burnett Gilmer age 91 of Sulligent, AL. died Sunday March 23, 2008 at the Golden Living Health Care Center in Winfield, AL. 

Born in the Fairview Community in Lamar County to the late Charlie and Zeo Black Burnett and a loving wife of the late Stanton Hankins Gilmer, they were married for 58 years. She was a devoted wife and mother, she loved cooking and caring for her family, and her children remember her happily singing hymns as she worked in her home and kept it in maculate condition. She taught her children and family by her example to do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, and was also a member of the Eastern Star. 

Survived by One Daughter: Claire Joan Marsh and her husband Jim of Bradenton, FL, One Son Charles Thomas Gilmer and his wife Marcelle of Sulligent, AL, Four Grandchildren: Thomas Gilmer Rollins and John Stanton Rollins and his wife Tamara Ann, Charles T. Gilmer Jr. and Cassandra K. Moore, Three Great Grandchildren: John Travis Rollins, Chelsea Summer Rollins, and Savannah Clair Rollins and One Great-Great Grandchild: Maile Summer Rollins, A Brother: Bill Burnett of Sulligent, AL, a Sister in Law: Drexel Welch of Katy, TX and several Nieces and Nephews. 

Preceded in death by her Parents and Husband and Four Sisters: Exie Trimm, Bessie Shaw, Ruth Fowler and Tollie Atkinson, Five Brothers: Robert Burnett, Elmer Burnett, Frank Burnett, Walter Burnett, and Homer Burnett.

Mary Simmons 

Mary Simmons age 86 of Guin, AL died Thursday, March 13, 2008 in the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield, AL. 

Born in Sulligent, AL she is the Daughter of the late Woods Henry and Earlie Virginia Miller Franks and the Wife of James C. Simmons for 66 years.  She had lived in Guin most of her life and had worked at Health-Tex and Champs Sewing Plant.  She loved quilting and working in her flowers.  She was a member of the Guin First Baptist Church. 

She is survived by her Husband, James C. Simmons of Guin, AL, 3 Daughters, Juanice (Hardy) Robinson of Guin, AL, Peggy (Ted) Markham and Nellie Webster all of Winfield, AL.  2 Sisters, Christine Richardson of Bridgeston, NJ, and Willie Mae Robertson of Guin, AL, 4 Brothers, Fred Franks of Guin, AL, John Billy Franks of Winfield, AL, Jack Franks of Trussville, AL and Gordon Franks of Hackleburg, AL, 7 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. 

Services held Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 2:00 PM from the Guin First Baptist Church with burial in the Guin City Cemetery.  Bro. Randy Wright, Bro. Danny Knight and Bro. Scott Stokes officiating.

Hoyt Scott 

Hoyt Scott age 88 of Detroit, AL died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at his residence. 

He was born in Lamar County to the late Oley Chester and Maudie Eugenia Stark Scott. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the Army, and was a member of the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. Hoyt was co-owner and operator along with his Brothers of the Scott Brothers Grain Company in Detroit, AL, the business was established in 1946. 

Survived by his Wife: Virginia Maxwell Scott of Detroit, AL, One Daughter: Beth McCarley (Larry) Jeffreys of Detroit, AL, Two Grandchildren: Gregory Scott (Beth) Jeffreys of Detroit, AL, and Jonathan Paul (Christy) Jeffreys of Detroit, AL Six Great Grandchildren: Katelyn Jeffreys, Isaac Jefferys, Hannah Jeffreys, Trey Jeffreys, Carley Ann Jeffreys, and Anna Beth Jeffreys, and a Host of Nieces and Nephews. 

Preceded in death by his Parents and Three Brothers: Pois Scott, Hobert Scott and Herman Scott. 

Services held Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. from the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church with burial in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Bro. Jeff Scott, Bro. Tim Markham and Bro. Dalton Eason officiating.

J.C. Reese

J.C. Reese age 65 of Smithville, MS, formerly of Guin, AL died Thursday March 13, 2008 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS.

He was born in Fayette County to the late Clyde and Sarah Head Reese. He was a resident of Smithville, MS since 1995 and was a member of the Smithville Church of Christ. J. C. had worked for Morris Rowell Construction, the State Hwy. Department and Hardin Manufacturing.

Survived by his Wife: Carolyn Reese of Smithville, MS, One Daughter: Melody (Joey) Nethery of Smithville, MS One Son: Louis Reese of Holly Springs, MS, One Sister: Lockie Noe of Sulligent, AL, Five Brothers: Buddy Head of Haleyville, AL, Tommy Reese of Fayetteville, TN, Jim Reese of Guin. AL, Rodger Reese of Winfield, AL, and Sammy Reese of Louisburg, TN, Four Grandchildren: Olivia Franklin, Megan Nethery, Kagan Nethery, and Skylar Reese, One Great Grandchild: Haly Franklin.

Hilrid Michael Northington 

Hilrid Michael Northinton was born July 19, 1947 to Hilrid and Dorothy Norton Northington.  He passed away on March 6, 2008 at the age of 60. 

To his grandchildren he was known as “paw paw” and to his nieces and nephews he was known as “Unc”. 

Born the son of a farmer, he quickly learned what hard work was about.  Michael attended Sulligent High School where he played football.  He was All Conference and All State.  After graduating from Sulligent High, he signed to play football with Ole Miss. 

After college he moved to Louisiana where he went to work on oil rigs.  This began his many different endeavors from driving trucks to owning his own service station and finally starting his own carpentry business.  He returned back to his home town of Detroit and began doing carpenter work.  In 1990 he built Harry and his family’s house.  If you talked to people in the area he touched many lives with his hands through his work. 

To Michael spending time with his family was what life was all about.  Whether he was riding his grandkids around on the tractor, helping his sons and daughter-in-law out with whatever they may have needed or helping his brother, Harry taking care of his parents.  Michael was about taking care of his family.  He will be deeply missed though our love for him will forever be in our hearts.  

He is survived by his Parents, Hilrid and Dorothy Norton Northington, of Detroit, AL, Three Sons, Michael Lynn (Beverley), Northington Thomas Scott Northington all of Detroit, AL and David Brooks of Jasper, AL, 4 Grandchildren, Erin Bailey and Michael Blake Northington and Courtney and Cody Brooks, A Brother, Harry Holt (Libby) Northington, Two Nieces, Mary Elizabeth (Kevin) Carter and Emily Harriette (Wade) Burton, A Nephew, Hilrid Lyle Northington, and Special Friends, Rita Cline, Stephen Taylor, Kim (Max) Vaughn, Bailey and Taylor Vaughn. 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Phinis “Bama” and Heltie Parr Northington and Thomas J and Mary Etta Turman Northon. 

Services held Sunday, March 9, 2008 at 2:00 pm from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery.  Bro. Jeff Scott and Bro. Tim Harris officiating.

Geraldine Collins Hyatt

Geraldine Collins Hyatt, age 77, passed away Tuesday following a brief illness.  Her last days were spent just as she wanted, on her farm, surrounded by flowers, friends, and family photos, with her children and grandchildren nearby.  Born Neva Geraldine Collins in Charleston, West Virginia, she spent much of her youth growing up in Guin, Alabama, where her father, Cecil Collins, ran the local appliance store and hardware store and her mother, Chloe Collins, ran the dry goods store next door.  She has lived in Owens Cross Roads for many years.

Gerry was an active volunteer in her community, donating many hours to the New Hope Public Library and the New Hope United Methodist Church.  She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church and the Hunt Springs Chapter, Daughters of the America Revolution.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Chloe Collins, and her son, Arthur Jack Hyatt, Jr.  She is survived by her children, Kathleen (Kevin) Millen of Nashville, TN, Peter (Beth) Hyatt of Dallas, TX, Tim (Nicolette) Hyatt of Bellingham, WA and David (Vicky) Hyatt of McDonough, GA as well as her sister, Ann (Edward) Lee of Madison, AL and her grandchildren Amelia Millen, Bill Millen, Linden Hyatt and Colleen Hyatt.

There will be a memorial service at New Hope United Methodist Church, Friday March 7, 2008, at 2:00pm. 

Funeral Services will be Saturday, March 8, 2008, 2:00pm,  Norwood Funeral Home Chapel in Guin, Alabama with burial in the Guin City Cemetery. Bro. Tim Alexander officiating.

Visitation from noon until 2:00 pm at the funeral home.

Bill Wright

Bill Wright age 86 of Guin AL died Monday, March 3, 2008 at his residence.

Born February 1, 1922 in Ft. Collins Colorado he was the oldest child of William Henry and Evelyn Dorothea Wolverton Wright. He lived a very vivid life around the country, but settled down in God's Country with the love of his life Mary Margaret Cromwell Wright. On April 20th they would have celebrated 35 years of marriage.

Bill was very well known for his humor and beautiful artistry. He was the owner of Wright Advertising in Guin. As a young man Bill worked out west building railroads with the Civilian Conservation Core until he was old enough to join the Army. He served our great country during World War II.

He is survived by his Wife, Mary Margaret Cromwell Wright of Guin, AL, A Daughter, Carolyn Sue (Mike) Lesley of Garland, TX, A Son, Lawrence "Larry" Eugene Wright of Carson City, NV, Step Daughter, Alisa Ellis of Atlanta, GA, Step Son, Frank Ellis of Guin, AL, Two Brothers, Lyle (Jackie) Wright of Quincy, FL and Paul (Mary Katherine) Wright of Decatur, GA and A Sister Lois Ann Cleary of Elmira, NY, Four Grandchildren, Chena Cline, Jessica Wright, David Wright, and Brandon (Amy) Wright, and Three Great Grandchildren, Kayne Thompson, Oma and Henry Wright and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a Son William "Beaver" Wright, and Three Brothers, Dwayne, Marion "Glen" and Dale Wright.

Memorial Services held Friday, March 7, 2008 at 11:00 AM from the Guin First United Methodist Church. Bro. Tim Alexander officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Guin First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 515, Guin, AL 35563.
