Charles B. Norton age 98 of Sulligent, AL, died Sunday, April 27, 2008 at the Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper, AL. Born in the Pine Springs Community to the late Claud Cylvester and Ella Plunkett Norton and the husband of the late Willie Mae Thomas Norton. He was a member of the Pine Springs United Methodist Church and was Past Master of the Masonic Lodge # 808 and a member of the Masonic Lodge #532. C.B. had lived in Birmingham, AL for Thirty-Six years and retired from U. S. Steel as an equipment operator. He was liked and loved by all who knew him with his witty sense of humor and personality. He had many friends and was a good friend to others. The sum of his life would be too lengthy to tell in a few words. He will be greatly missed by family and friends, but he left a legacy to be remembered. Survived by One Son: Charles (Geneva) Norton of Kimberly, AL, One Sister: Billie Fay (D.D.) Real of Hamilton, AL, Three Grandchildren: Beverly Green, Barry Norton, and Melanie Harris, Five Great Grandchildren: Christopher, Amanda, Jessica, Emily, and Savanna, and Eight Great Great-Grandchildren. Redden Thomas Wallace age 97 of Guin, Alabama passed away Friday April 25, 2008 at the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield. Born in Beaverton, AL. He is the Son of the late Aaron and Alice Harton Wallace and the Husband of the late Alice Pearl Metcalfe Wallace. He had lived in the Guin area all of his life and was a member of the Guin Church Of Christ. He is survived by 4 Daughters, Mittie Nalls of Fayette, AL, Lillie (Jr.) Key of Guin, AL, Amanda Hackman of Guin, AL and Judy McDaniels of St. Louis, MO. 3 Sons, Redden ( Anna Jean) Wallace, Jr., George (Ada) Wallace and Mack (Sandra) Wallace all of Guin, AL. 21 Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild. Warren Hollis age 76 of Gadsden, AL died Sunday, April 6, 2008 in the Riverview Medical Center in Gadsden. Born in Lamar County, AL. He is the Son of the late Guy and Ruby Gray Hollis. He was a former resident of Guin and had operated the Hollis Motel in Guin for several years. He had lived in Gadsden the past 2 years, was a member of the Rock Creek Baptist Church in Bessemer and was a Veteran of the Korean War having served in the US Army. Matha Hollis age 67, of Sulligent, AL passed away Friday April 4, 2008 at the Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory, Mississippi. She was born in Kemper County Mississippi to the late J.T. and Jessie Hammond Harbour. She has been a resident of the Sulligent area since 1968 and was a member of the Academy Baptist Church near Vernon, AL. Mrs. Hollis retired from the Lamar County Health Department from the Home Health Division were she was a Registered Nurse. Fred Brown age 93 of Guin, AL died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at his residence. Born in Higdon, Arkansas, he is the Son of the late John and Cora Brown. He had lived in Guin the past 33 years and was a member of the Philadelphia Methodist Church. He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. Dolly Burnett Gilmer age 91 of Sulligent, AL. died Sunday March 23, 2008 at the Golden Living Health Care Center in Winfield, AL. Born in the Fairview Community in Lamar County to the late Charlie and Zeo Black Burnett and a loving wife of the late Stanton Hankins Gilmer, they were married for 58 years. She was a devoted wife and mother, she loved cooking and caring for her family, and her children remember her happily singing hymns as she worked in her home and kept it in maculate condition. She taught her children and family by her example to do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, and was also a member of the Eastern Star. Survived by One Daughter: Claire Joan Marsh and her husband Jim of Bradenton, FL, One Son Charles Thomas Gilmer and his wife Marcelle of Sulligent, AL, Four Grandchildren: Thomas Gilmer Rollins and John Stanton Rollins and his wife Tamara Ann, Charles T. Mary Simmons age 86 of Guin, AL died Thursday, March 13, 2008 in the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield, AL. Born in Sulligent, AL she is the Daughter of the late Woods Henry and Earlie Virginia Miller Franks and the Wife of James C. Simmons for 66 years. She had lived in Guin most of her life and had worked at Health-Tex and Champs Sewing Plant. She loved quilting and working in her flowers. She was a member of the Guin First Baptist Church. She is survived by her Husband, James C. Hoyt Scott age 88 of Detroit, AL died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Lamar County to the late Oley Chester and Maudie Eugenia Stark Scott. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the Army, and was a member of the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. Hoyt was co-owner and operator along with his Brothers of the Scott Brothers Grain Company in Detroit, AL, the business was established in 1946. Hilrid Michael Northinton was born July 19, 1947 to Hilrid and Dorothy Norton Northington. He passed away on March 6, 2008 at the age of 60. To his grandchildren he was known as “paw paw” and to his nieces and nephews he was known as “Unc”. Born the son of a farmer, he quickly learned what hard work was about. Michael attended Sulligent High School where he played football. He was All Conference and All State. After graduating from Sulligent High, he signed to play football with Ole Miss. After college he moved to Louisiana where he went to work on oil rigs. This began his many different endeavors from driving trucks to owning his own service station and finally starting his own carpentry business. He returned back to his home town of Detroit and began doing carpenter work. In 1990 he built Harry and his family’s house. If you talked to people in the area he touched many lives with his hands through his work. To Michael spending time with his family was what life was all about. Whether he was riding his grandkids around on the tractor, helping his sons and daughter-in-law out with whatever they may have needed or helping his brother, Harry taking care of his parents. Michael was about taking care of his family. He will be deeply missed though our love for him will forever be in our hearts. Geraldine Collins Hyatt, age 77, passed away Tuesday following a brief illness. Her last days were spent just as she wanted, on her farm, surrounded by flowers, friends, and family photos, with her children and grandchildren nearby. Born Neva Geraldine Collins in Charleston, West Virginia, she spent much of her youth growing up in Guin, Alabama, where her father, Cecil Collins, ran the local appliance store and hardware store and her mother, Chloe Collins, ran the dry goods store next door. She has lived in Owens Cross Roads for many years. Gerry was an active volunteer in her community, donating many hours to the New Hope Public Library and the New Hope United Methodist Church. She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church and the Hunt Springs Chapter, Daughters of the America Revolution. Gerry was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Chloe Collins, and her son, Arthur Jack Hyatt, Jr. She is survived by her children, Kathleen (Kevin) Millen of Nashville, TN, Peter (Beth) Hyatt of Dallas, TX, Tim (Nicolette) Hyatt of Bellingham, WA and David (Vicky) Hyatt of McDonough, GA as well as her sister, Ann (Edward) Lee of Madison, AL and her grandchildren Amelia Millen, Bill Millen, Linden Hyatt and Colleen Hyatt. There will be a memorial service at New Hope United Methodist Church, Friday March 7, 2008, at 2:00pm.
